Seeing the Preservation Hall Band ( Percy & Willie Humphrey, "Big" Jim Robinson, Sweet Emma Barrett, Emanuel Sayles, Alcide " Slow Drag" Pavageau & Cie Frazier ) on a cold Minneapolis Winter's night in 1964 was the MOMENT I discovered the power of music to transform one's existence. I was 12.
15 years later, I was a deck hand on the Delta Queen and enjoyed taking 6 string banjo lessons from Danny Barker, hanging with Willie and Percy Humphrey ( still alive! ) and listening to them play every night for a week.
How on earth I ended up playing pedal steel is another story.....
