Hawaiian Steel Player Alika Kaneakua has passed away on Februrary 14th. He was 87.
He was a student of the late great Benny Rogers who played for Genoa Keawe.

Alika's photo appeared on the 49th State Recording vinyl cover although it was Benny Rogers who played on these recordings.

Funeral is set for this Thursday at Borthwick's from 6-9 pm, burial at Hawaiian Memorial Park Friday at 9:00 am.

I'm not familiar with his work.

Did he play in the "Rogers" style?

I regret I never met 'nor heard Alika Kaneakua during my many visits to Hawai'i Nei. My loss. He was there during the "Golden Years of Hawaiian Music". I have an old picture which I took of Ray Kinney back in 1970 playing at the Halekulani. I'm now wondering if the steel player in that pic is Alika...sure looks like the same person.

He played in the same style like Benny Rogers from what I've heard.

Alika had his own style but maintained that Rogers fluidity. Very melodic single-note player. Auwe, another unsung hero that won't even be mentioned in the haole history books.

Baz, in Hawaii, AUWE is merely an word of exclamation, i.e. Oh, ouch, etc.

I lived in Hawaii for many years but did not come across this fellow, however I may have seen him in various shows but did not know who he was. Of course there were many entertainers that I have heard but did not know their names.

I may have more on this later.

Aloha,
Don

I always heard that "haole" meant non-Hawaiian, is that true?

Hi Bill,
Haole literally means "white person" or "foreigner".
