My brother plays banjo and has the Bill Keith tuners (I think that's the right name)and Buck had the same kind or simular tuners that have stops built in. You use standard banjo tuning (D,B,G,D,G) and you can drop the second string B to an A and the third string G to F# and set the stops for the two notes so they will be in tune. By dropping the 2nd B to A and back to B is like using the A pedal on steel. The Scruggs tuners are made different but do the same thing. Buck was thinking steel when he played or it aleast sounded like it.

I would like to add that like the pedals on steel you can set them up to raise or lower any string you can use these tuners to do that. If you want to raise a string instead of lowering it.

Buck also had a couple of push-buttons in the head of his banjo, installed by Shot Jackson, that moved some strings. I don't believe that particular banjo can be played acoustically at all. |
