Jimmie,
I have been using Avast for a couple years now, no problems, also it updates just about every time I log on.Wiz also has links on his website to a couple of free providers.

Jimmie;
I have links on my blog, in the right sidebar, to various freeware anti virus and anti spyware programs. I use and recommend all of the following programs:
AVG Free Anti Virus
Spybot Search and Destroy
Microsoft Windows Defender
Ad-Aware Personal
SpywareBlaster
ZoneAlarm Free Basic Firewall
AVG also has a free anti spyware program, but I haven't tried it yet. It used to be called Ewido. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

I vote for AVG. I replaced Norton with AVG on both of my computers, my sons computer and several others with excellent results |

Wiz, I've used both "spybot" and "ad-aware" and each found different items on my computer. Do you think it's a little overkill to use both of them and maybe one or the other would suffice? |

I was asked if using two or more anti-spyware programs is overkill. No, I don't, and for this reason. Most anti-spyware programs, especially the free ones, do not have real time protection running as a process. You install them, update them every week, then manually scan with them for threats, and remove whatever is turned up. If you have two anti spyware programs, chances are good that one of them will be more up-to-date, at any given moment, than the other one. The more up-to-date scanner may find a new threat on your computer that the other program missed. SpywareBlaster doesn't even scan for threats; it inoculates the Registry against them, by setting what's called a Kill-Bit, which prevents items on the definitions list from becoming active on your computer.
The above does not apply to many commercial anti-spyware programs though. This is because most of them do have real time system protection processes and you don't want any conflicts between security programs. The same applies to anti-virus programs. Most of them have real time processes and would clash with each other, if two were running at the same time.
Another thing you only want one of is a software firewall. If you install ZoneAlarm, or Norton Personal Firewall, etc, they will disable the Windows Firewall. The built-in Windows Firewall (Windows XP, Server 2003 and Vista) is lame, but better than nothing at all. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum
