sandy is about 1 1/2 weeks into learning to play the steel . it makes me understand just how far I have come since those 1st days
(not that i'm great)
but its almost painful watching as she struggles with the simple things like playing two strings at once and getting them to sound right ,
then having to jump up or down one string and refinding the strings .
us older pickers often complain that we are having trouble playing this or that,
but what we are mostly complaining about is not being able to get the phrasing right or some thing along those lines .
not the simple things like getting tangled in the strings , looking at our feet , missing the fret . and so on
its so easy for us to forget the newbee's struggle's in the 1st few days of learning

Did Sandy already play something else? I only have vague recollection of my premusical life, but my fiancée has started making music, and I get to help her.
GO SANDY!!

she has never played anything before !!!

if someone that didn't know what was going on walked in and saw her playing
they would think that she was rubbing the cat with her right foot ,
trying to kill a bug with her left foot,
while holding a dime between her knees
scratching her butt with her right hand
and washing a window with her left

30 years ago a friend that played pedal steel tried to teach me. His quote "If it don't look like you need to go the bathroom real bad, you ain't doin' it right!"

I cannot fathom that. Thanks to a musical parent, I played mandolin (rhythm, no Sam Bush here) at 5, piano lessons at 7, guitar at 11, Dobro at 15. And pedal steel was an Oedipus¹ at 17

¹I know y'all can get that.

i'm doing all I can to encourage her ,
its simply amazing how hard the simple things we do and take for granted can be for the 1st time player.
they become 2nd nature to us and we never seem to remember the struggles WE had with them
