If one does not play C6, I don't see the point to own a double neck pedal steel.
Just my two cents.

Lloyd Green played a D-10 until he figured out he didn't want/need it. So did Jerry Garcia. They both gutted the C6 neck.

the past year hardly at all, maybe 3 or 4 songs. I had been considering just going to an S10 and being done with it. But then I sit back at home and play a variation of Night Life and a few other classic tunes and change my mind. Even if the Lower TEN is just for me that will be enough.

the D10 stays...

I love the C6th neck---just can't play very much on it yet. I still manage to flip the neck switch on a gig every now and then. But most of my playing is on E9th neck.

On some gigs I play only E9. Mostly the singer/song writer or pop type gigs. Although its nice to have the C neck handy when the singer wants to play standards.

On country gigs I end up on the C neck about a third of the time. I have been playing a couple steady gigs a week where I play nothing but the C neck. So I have been bringing my 8st C6 lapsteel to those gigs. The music is ragtime blues in one band and early swing/jazz/blues in the other.

When I played with Asleep at the Wheel, my E9th neck kind of rusted over...

It completely depends on the gig, but I tend to favor my E tuning a lot more.

I play a D-12, so I didn't vote. When I'm sitting in with a country band I use the C6th about 25% of the time, mostly for western swing.

In Open Hearts our music is tightly arranged, and I wrote most of my parts before I started bringing the D-12 to gigs. As a result, I only play C6th on 3 of our songs. I'm always checking out the new material, though, to see if C6th will work.

Here's one of those 3 songs (warning, contains harmonica):
Down Home Kitchen Blues

There's never enough C6 action for my preference. It's always a nice treat. C6 works better for a lot of songs that don't have steel... Until you come along.

That's why the SD10 is now avalaible to all !

Speaking for myself, I play C6 60% of the time with my band.

75% of my playing is on C6th. If we're doing a real Nashville tune, I jump up and catch it on E9th. I also use E9th for one of the many steel guitar instrumentals in my song book.

I THINK C6th....... For variation I play E9th.

Well, when I play Madison Square Bedroom, I seem to play the C6th neck about half the time.

I also just got an 8 string fender deluxe, and tuned it ACEGACEG, lo to hi. so that's the same as 8 strings of the 10 string C6 neck. So, I guess I play it alot.

Everyone should have a D10, or at least a Uni.

Just because you have a Dโ€“10 with an E9-Neck doesn't necessarily mean that the โ€œother neckโ€ has to be C6. You could expand your horizons and use something different!

if i have a D10, it's obviously cause i wanted that C6, even if i knew nothin' about it at first
i ended up diggin' C6 over E9
when i play for others, E9 is the most sollicited
now when i play fer myself, it's mostly on C6

I don't play the C6 tuning. I play the E6 tuning on the bottom neck, it could just as well be A6,Bb6,D6, or uni-12 B6, it is still all C6 style playing.
But I have played E9 for many years for Money, but never play it for fun....al.SmileSmile
