Hey Mike, the blinking folder might mean it can't find the startup disk. Anyway, he needs to pop in the install disk and reboot while holding down the "C" key. This will boot it from the disk and after going thru a couple on install screens (don't reinstall yet) he can got to disk utility, available in the menu bar at the top of the screen, and run that to repair permissions and the hard drive. And then cancel the install and reboot. _________________ C#

"ANY OSX will do" sounds like a cue for a song "Joseph".. 'That's AMAZING'
Looks like your friend's hard drive has problems, but hopefully NOT irreparable.
look what I just picked up |

Michael
There is a " safe mode " that may allow him to start up .
At the same time it gives you the F cord fanfare push & hold
the " Shift " key that should start it with all extensions off .
some times what you describe is caused by the OSX
loaded on OS9 classic . if it an older system ! IF IT Starts !
he can select to OS folder , then restart .
hope this helps

Aren't we Intel/AMD/Windows/DOS users always being told how Macs don't ever fail ? |

Well... I think it's probably like, the higher percentage of any product that's out there, the more you will hear about problems with it. If there are 48 million of one car and 2,000 of another out, there will be more problems with the 48 million. As MAC's become more popular and more in use (thanks in part to their clever marketing in recent years), they are bound to be more susceptible to problems, viruses, etc. _________________ Mikey D... No. I've never heard anyone claim that any computer literally "never failed." |

Alan, I've had computers since Clive Sinclair's Science of Cambridge's MK14 and then the ZX-80 and Spectrum, followed by everything since, even so, I do believe that the vast majority of "Failures' and problems are what's technically known as "Pilot error" !! (At least that's the polite name for it)
I'm sitting in my study looking at the computer bank in front of me, 1 VERY Fast home constructed Pee Cee for the magazine printing, (It drives the lasers better than the macs), 3 G4's topped off with a dualprocessor G5.
One of the G4's is for internet, one for Quark/Photoshop/DTP for the magazine, and one running Logic Audio 7. The G5 is running Logic 8 Studio and the Adobe Creative Suite 3, plus the necessary Microshaft applications such as Excel and Word.
The macs are far less trouble and much more logical..
Did you know that THIS forum is running on the smallest of the macs :-
6.5 inches x 1.96850394 inches !!
