Super Sustain Match Box

Can anyone clarify for me what one of these boxes actually does? I am really new to all these toys and am wondering if it is something I should look into.

I really like mine, not only because it's a neat looking gadgit, but it's a nice way to tweak the tone or volume without reaching over to your amp.
