I have a CD released in 1992 called
"Hukilau Hulas". Both Freddie & Ernie Tavares are on the recording, but I believe Freddie was the steel guitarist. Does anyone know which tunings Freddie used?
Did Freddie or Ernie make any instrumental albums?

Freddie Tavares is featured with his steel on the Columbia LP from ca. the late 1960s- Ray Coniff's Hawaiian Album. I have even used cuts from this LP on my "Swingin' West" radio show.

Roger,
I'm quite sure Gene Fields would know, as he worked with Freddie for many years at Fender. You can reach him through GFI Steel Guitars at GFI

I was told by folks in the HSGA that Barney Isaacs was the steel player for Donovan's Reef. Were there more than one on the sound track? I have the movie, and it sounds like Barney to me. |

Bill, you got me thinking and I decided to play the DVD of it and see..
There are two different orchestral arrangers and two different sound engineers credited, It is Definitely Freddie playing on the Hollywood orchestral pieces and Definitely Barney Isaacs Jr. playing on the small group recordings. Sam Koki seems to be playing second steel to Barney on some of the tunes.. (Sounds like most of the "Hawaii Calls" crew)
IMHO.. FWIW.. |

Hi Roger,
In addition to the Golden Hits of Hawaii on the GNP Label, Warner Bros. produced four LP's called as follows: (1) Rapture
(2) Captivation (3) Surrender (4) Golden Hits of Hawaii, which is a composite of the first three. The group was called the "Outriggers" -- they have instrumental and vocal. I particularly like (1) Rapture with the excellent blended female vocals.
I have been told that Ernie Taveras is the Steel Guitarist and also at other times, I'm told Freddie is the Steel Guitarist. It sounds more like Ernest to me. Does anyone know for sure.
Warren

Warren, there is a way of telling.
Freddie's tuning at the time was E-C-A-F#-Eb-C-A-F#
whereas Ernie's six string tuning was D-Bb-G-E-Db-Bb
Freddie played a Fender 1000. with sharpening AND flattening whilst Ernie played a guitar he made himself that only sharpened, AND Freddie played with less vibrato (Presumably because of his larger chordal style)
So to recapitulate, two different pitches of OPEN strings, so listen out for hammer-ons, and if you hear a note within a chord drop in pitch, it can only be Freddie..
WARREN......BTW one of our readers (Aloha Dream) wishes to send you some magazines, can you e-mail me your address please so I can pass it on ?

Now.. Rodger, to answer your question about his tuning, he didn't call it a tuning.. just a "Set-up"
This is in Vince Akina's own hand and drawn from examining Freddies guitar.

I've just noticed that the set-up is almost the same as the one I started with when I first bought a Gibson EH-150 Six string 4 pedal
Instead of D9 based I was C9 based much like a six string version of Freddies . |
