It is a sad day indeed for the steel guitar world. John Hughey passed away from a heart attacK and stroke at 6:30 today, November 18th, 2007

I know you've lost a dear friend and I grieve with you. I just finished a CD in Sept with John and Al Bruno. I was only beginning to get to know John away from the steel shows and he was one of the greatest gentlemen I have had the pleasure of
meeting. I will miss him also.
My very best is sent your way, and I'll be calling Jean.

I just can't believe this...man this is so horrible...my heart goes out to Jean and the entire family...he was one of the most talented musicians of all time, but more important, one of the nicest human being I have ever met! I'm so sad...

Susan and I send our very best to Jean. This is both a major loss to music and to humanity!

Our hearts are greatly saddened and our prayers are with his family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

This is terrible news. The world has lost a wonderful person. I considered John a dear friend. I just don't know what to say.

My most heart felt grief goes out to Jean And Her family, and all the friends of My Good Friend John. I hired him for Loretta's band several years ago. What a great steel guitar player and greater person he was. I will miss him very much. I talked to him two days ago, and he told me he was doing great. Very sad news. His recording with Dicky Betts on his solo album "Highway Call" is what got me first interested in steel guitar. His passing is a great loss. My sincere condolences go out to his family.

I'm left without words. He was my steel guitar hero, my friend, and a great influence on so many of us. It is a sad day indeed. Jean and the family will be in our prayers for sure.

This is terrible news for everyone. Thanks John for the great playing and the great person.

I only met John once but this great man took the time to talk with me and to help build my confidence because I was at an impass with the learning skills of the steel guitar. He then sat me down at his Zum and watched me and help me with some of playing issues...
He complimented me on my playing technic and then he assured me that there would come a time that my problem would pass and I would move forward with my learning and skills and he was right on.
I have moved leaps and bounds and a lot of it I know was due to his kind words and advise..
I know there are a lot of really great steel players here on the forum but I have to say without any doubt that Mr. John was my favorite...
You will be missed but I am sure God could use your beautiful playing style in HEAVEN.
How many great musicians do you know, would do that for a fellow player.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of a true steel guitar legend. I met him twice, and a nicer, more genuine person you will never find. He was one of my favourites, and the one that stirred the most emotion in me while watching him live and listening to his CDs. He put his heart and soul into his playing. Wow. This is a jolt. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family. I will miss seeing him this year in Dallas. Oh my, this is so sad.

I just can't believe this... I just talked to Mike Schrimpf's wife, Netha, and she told me... John, my bud, my hero... this one hits too close... just too close...
