Well, Russ isn’t really the star of the show. (As far as I am concerned, he is, but he portrays Hank’s steel player rather than Hank.)
The wife and I were privileged to see Russ and his show last night, and the only word to describe it is superb. The singing, playing, and acting are all first rate. I’ve heard Russ play pedal steel many times, but for this show he played his Gibson non- pedal guitar, and he blew me away with his command of the instrument.
The show depicts Hank’s story pretty faithfully, showing both the depths of his talent and his faults. The music was superbly done. Every member of the cast who had a musical role was outstanding. I was especially impressed with the fiddle player.
I was also impressed with the audience, who for the most part consisted of young people. I got the impression many of them were hearing Hank’s music for the first time.
To those of you who live within driving distance of Laguna Beach (about half way between L.A. and San Diego,) I urge you to see this wonderful show. And to the rest of you, don’t miss it if/when it comes to your area. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.
