Dobro players -- I'm curious about how you deal with playing up the neck, i.e. above the 12th (higher, if capoed), especially on the bass strings. I sometimes find that I have to twist my wrist quite a bit to stay over the fret.
Anyone else notice this, or am I making too big a deal of it? Since Jerry Douglas, Mike Auldrisge and Rob Ickes don't seem to have any problems, I should just deal with it, right?
Thanks,
Peter |

Hey Peter, Is this more an issue playing seated? Either way (but especially if seated) try shifting the guitar's position a little in the direction of the headstock, allows for keeping the bar hand at a little less severe angle to your wrist when "up there".
Did this help? |

Thanks, Mark -- I should have specified this is something I notice when standing. When I sit, I can move the guitar around to give myself more clearance in front of me. |

In this pic I'm standing, I'd say the angle of wrist to hand is about typical, so there is some twist for sure, but I don't physically or mentally hover over the lower fret positions which seems to make it easier to play above the 12th.

Thanks for the pic, Mark. Yeah, that's about what I'm doing, too. I'm probably overthinking this, since every player just accepts it. It was one of those things where I started wondering why squareneck resos join the body at the 12th fret instead of the 14th. It would give a bit more room to maneuver in the upper part of the neck. |
