i was looking thru Jeff Newmans honk tonk hero's set 3 and on the song " i'm so lonesome i could cry" he has a couple of chords that i'm not sure about.
the first one is written as FMAJ7 and the next chord in the progression is F7 aren't these the same thing ??
there is also an F6 and a Eb9

can some tell me about these ?

Calvin,

FM7 is spelled F-A-C-E and F7 (or F dominant 7) is spelled F-A-C-Eb... not the same thing.

F6 is F-A-C, which is the F major triad, with the 6th added which is D, so the spelling is F-A-C-D.

Eb9 is another dominant so it would be spelled Eb-G-Bb-Db-F. That's Eb dominant 7 with the 9th added.

I cant think of any other way to post, so If its more than you wanted just ignore this:

Chords are built off of the major scale.
there are seven scale degrees in the major scale:
They are spaced with whole tones (Skip a fret)and half tones (Fret to fret) like this:

1 2 34 5 6 71, In c:
C D EF G A BC

After 7 it repeats (an octave)

The Major chord is 1-3-5 :So for Cmaj, it is C-E-G
The minor chord is 1-b3-5 :So for Cmin, it is C-Eb-G

All other chords use these as foundations except for sus4th chords, which are (1-4-5).

The chords your asking about are built on the major chord, (1-3-5)

For F chords, These are based on the Fmajor scale:

1 2 3 4 5 6 78
F G A A# C D EF

FMAJ7 :for the MAJ7 the 7th note is natural, or simply the major chord with the 7th scale degree added in (1-3-5-7)
or F-A-C-E.

7th :with the F7 chord, called a 7th chord, the 7th tone is flat one half step, (1-3-5-b7) = F-A-C-Eb

6th: for f6, just add the 6th scale tone.
(1-3-5-6) =F-A-C-D

A ninth chord is built off of a 7th chord: just add the 9th scale degree, which is really the same as the 2nd scale degree! extending the scale into the second octave we get:

1 2 3 4 5 6 78 9 1011 12 13
F G A A# C D EF G A A# C D

9th chord:(1-3-5-b7-9) so:
build an Eb 7th first, Eb-G-A#-C#, then add the 9, or 2nd degree, F

Why 9 versus 2?
Since there are only 7 notes to go off of in a major scale, the numbers 9,11 and 13 refer to the scale tones 2,4,6 to show that the chords are built on the 7th or Maj 7chords, Versus just being 1-3-5-6, 1-4-5(sus4th) etc. So Chords containing 9,11, or 13must contain a 7th or MAJ7 chord base. This distinguishes the chord from a fourth or 6th chord, which does not have the b7 or 7 scale tone

The Chord is named after the 1st scale tone ; the 1 of the 1-3-5-etc is the name, the 7th, 9th maj minor or whatever is the chord quality

Eb9th is 1-3-5-b7-9 with the 1 being Eb

You can use the cheat sheet I sent you for this as well if you still have it, It lists all the scale tones by number so you can build of the root note.

Calvin,
If you don't need the F in the F major7th chord, you can substitute an A minor chord. That will give you the A, C & E.

F Major 7:
First fret, no pedals or levers, play as many of these strings as you can get at:
8 6 5 3 2

Now drop the second string a half-tone with your knee lever (RKR?), and play the same strings again to get the F7

ok now i'm really getting confused:

i always thought that if i was playing F at the 1st fret using strings 865 all i had to do to get F7 was drop the 8 and hit the 7 or 9 string with the 65

Picking the 9th string will give you the 7th tone(Eb) for the F. Not a major 7th, however.

To be quick I sub in a #3 minor chord for a maj7 chord, and a #6minor for a 6th chord.
So for key of C

c d e fg a b c

A CMAJ7 is e minor, (8th fret 4/8lower)
A C6th chord is a minor (8th fret a pedal)

this is 3/4 of the respective chords without the root note, which works well over the bass and vocalist who are usually playing the root note anyway. In other words, let the whole band form the chord versus me having to play every note of it myself. Kinda mixes in the brain of the listener I think.

Calvin,
If you want to know what a Maj 7 sounds like, listen to the Eagles 'Lying Eyes'.

Steve,
Thanks so much for the great info you provided to Calvin and us all.
As for me, I printed it off and will include it in my binder of "goodies" when I practice.

That's what's so great about this forum...people giving of themselves so that others can learn. What a great place to be!
Again, my sincere thanks.
Bent
