I'm getting too paranoid to take my old Oahu Tonemaster out to the dives I play in.
Any recommendations for a lap under $300
or $250!

Are you looking for a new guitar or another vintage guitar? The only lap steels I know of that are new and under $300 are the Artisan, Morrell and Gretsch lap steels. I wouldn't necessarily recommend any of them sight unseen; I'd recommend you try to play one before buying.
I'd recommend the Goldtone lap steel, since it's basically a copy of your Tonemaster, but it's out of that price range.
For vintage guitars, keep an eye out on eBay for one of the older Supro or Valco instruments. Those are frequently found for well under $300. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

I have an old Harmony in good shape. There are a couple of minor chips out of the MOTS but very clean and original, $279.00 plus shipping. I'll put it in a gig bag for you also.

If you have a Tele or Strat style guitar you don't use you could always get a "Redneck" from forumite Loni Specter - turns your guitar into a lap steel in less than ten minutes, sounds and plays great.
Another option is forumite Mark Vinbury's Dynalap kits - looks good and have received very positive reviews.

In that price range, your best bet is probably another good-condition Supro/Valco/Oahu/etc. They're readily available used, so they're replacable unless you have a sentimental attachment or have found a particularly sweet one.
I lucked into a used Fouke last summer, which is an AWESOME gigging axe but feels and sounds different from the vintage classics. And a new Fouke is well outside the $300 budget range. I'm putting a new pickup in mine this week, a Harmonic Design Z90 - I find the stock humbucker guilty of typical PAF muddiness. If the new pickup gets me close to the clear tone of the Supro/Valco pickups, I'll be VERY happy.
At any rate, the positives of the Fouke... it's lightweight, effectively indestructable, tunes easily, looks great (if you like the modern look, which I do), and has a very handy gig bag. Just what I want from a gigging instrument! If you can find one used for $300, snap it up. _________________ I don’t believe in pixie dust, but I believe in magic.

The String-thru pickup of the Valco made steels should be great for tones with a "little hair" or a full mane |
