Anybody know what this is?
It powers on but doesn't seem to do anything when I put it inline with my steel.
If you have any use for it, I'll give it away free for cost of shipping.

I believe it's a keyboard thing. You might try putting it on ebay. Someone might really like to get it. There are a lot of keyboard guys who are into old analog synth equiptment.
All I could find in a Dogpile search was this reference:
"Matrixsynth: JH Triple Chorus Sring Ensemble
Until now, all I've been able to find that's even slightly similar is the MTI ADL-100 Analog String Ensemble FX box - and those aren't exactly easy to find ..." |

It's an early chorus, as I recall. I had one a couple of decades ago. It didn't sound real great but the circuit was kinda crappy. It probably needed recapped and checked out. |

It's yours, Jim. I'm just trying to clean out the music room.
Send me an email for the details. |

Mystery solved...
It's a very unusual unit. I did web searches and talked to a bunch of effects gurus, and it's one of those "oh, yeah - I heard of it. Never seen one, though" semi-mythical beasts. Takes up 1/2 a rack space.
And yes, it did nothing. On the back are input, mode (footswitch), bypass (footswitch), out and dry. I screwed with every combination and got nothing but dry signal, so I took it apart, cleaned/lubed every moving electrica part, trim pots (a bunch), jacks and switches with Caig products, and lo and behold about 4 hours later I had a working unit. The bypass footswitch jack works with anything, but the "mode" (basically a speed switch) will only work with my FS-5 latching or unlatching switches that use a regular guitar cable.
This thing is REALLY weird, and really cool for limited use - "sensitivity" works like a compressor, lengthening the time of the signal; "attack" is like a noise gate, where it kicks in at varied input levels (and is touch sensitive.
What it does is almost a backwards-tape sound with a slow or fast leslie effect (the "mode"). Set correctly (for me anyway) you play a chord and there is NO sound from the amp, then it slowly gets louder and finally cuts off. By varying your timing...plus adding a good distortion unit with excellent string seperation...it sounds like a violin, viola and cello playing in harmony, with a little vibrato. When using it you don't need your volume pedal as it is an *automatic* volume pedal.
Very fun. Weird, but fun. My older son already wants to swipe it to record with.
