I especially liked this statement from one fan ...
"One such listener is 50-something Linda Jones of Sacramento, who says she started tuning in to KNCI 15 years ago, almost by mistake.
"I worked at a place that had it on, and I started to realize that the music reminded me of the rock 'n' roll I used to like," Jones says." |

Hah! That's pretty funny! Now, if only we could find some music that reminds us of the country [music] we used to like |

Tom,good luck on finding ANYTHING resembling country music on the radio today[are a few that plays the real thing ,but very few]What is called country today is only a very, very,POOR attempt at 70's rock, but none of the contemporary so-called country artist are in the same league with groups such as The Eagles, and anyone that thinks real country music lyrics are just about some guy losing his girl, his dog,or his pickup truck, need to listen to some Cindy Walker,Harlen Howard,Mickey Newberry,John Hartford, etc,What's some of the hits today,Bo-donk-a donk honky tonk,or Batter,Batter,Batter, don't you know. _________________ Hard headed, opinionated old geezer. Similarly, I was decrying to a lady that the new country is nothing but 70’s rock revisited. She replied, “That must be why I’ve recently found myself liking it.” To which I replied, “Well to each his own. I didn’t like it in the 70’s and I don’t like it now, especially at the expense of the music I do like.” _________________ HagFan

Some 50 years ago where I come from ,we would be lucky to get 1 hour of country music a day on AM radio. No country music on TV, no show out of Nashville. There is a lot more COUNTRY MUSIC out there today,to please everyone. You have more styles to choose from, what's wrong with that.Joe |

Joe, I guess that depends on where you lived. We'd watch the Ozark Jubilee, and Tennesee Ernie Ford back in the '50s, and then Jimmy Dean and Ernest Tubb (and sometimes the Wilburn Bros.) in the '60s. After that, things sorta degraded to Johnny Cash, Glen Campbell, Mac Davis, Barbara Mandrell, and a host of others...each one a little more "uptown", and a little more show than music. (Everyone was trying to be a cross between Ed Sullivan and The Opry.) When Hee-Haw was around, it was a breath of fresh air (or country air) for most of us, and then in the '80s we had shows like Nashville Alive, Nashville Now, and That Nashville Country. When Hee Haw finally went off the air, it marked the end of real country music (except for occasional excellent shows on Austin City Limits). ACL now sets the standard for how a music show should be done, but plain ol' music jes' ain't very big, nowadays.
Pity. |

The music, maybe, but not the humor. I could keep a straight face through an entire episode of Hee Haw, in fact I was more likely to wince than smile at any of the corny jokes and routines on that show. |
