Musician's Friend has a Rogue 6 string lap steel with stand and gig bag for $80, has anybody tried one? _________________ Williams S-12,Nashville-112, VK 100 head/Justice 15" BW speaker cab, Peavey Pro-Fex II,5 guitars and a banjo |

I edited your message to clarify that it's Musician's Friend selling these Rogue lap steels. It's the exact same steel as the Artisan EA-2 previously discussed here and here.
Pros: cheapest stand up lap steel currently available; comes with gig bag and leg bag.
Cons: worth what you paid for it. Short (21") scale length; wooden nut; legs don't extend high enough for tall people. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

Thanks Brad,
That's what I pretty much thought but had to ask. Guess my knock-off LesPaul lapsteel convert will work just as well. |

A good alternative for a [cheap] lap is,A New York Pro,tele style guitar, put a [I perfer bone] raised nut on it,has a long scale, easy to play, sounds good, really good for playing blues with a distortion pedal, don't you know. _________________ Hard headed, opinionated old geezer. I started out on an Artisan a couple of years ago (my first steel). Sound-wise, it's actually okay. I replaced the pickup in mine with a used Lace Sensor, mostly for hum issues. Here's a recording of mine made with the Lace Sensor, about six weeks after I started playing steel...
http://www.extraterrestrialhighway.net/music/not_the_marrying_kind.mp3
The recording has the signal split between a Savage Macht 12 amp, and a RNC compressor straight into the board. The engineer was so proud of the sound he still shows it off! (and it's a really nice song, too...)
The problem with the Artisan/Rogue is really in the scale length. It's just too short to do slants well. When I finally upgraded from the Artisan to a GOOD lap steel, my playing improved 1000%, not so much for the tone as for finally having a good scale length for slants and clean vibrato. _________________ I don’t believe in pixie dust, but I believe in magic.
