I just "discovered" Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen. Wow, I really like much of the steel playing. Seems that Bobby Black is the main player with contributions from Ernie Hagar and WVC. I was looking around for info on the Forum about Mr. Black and didn't really find much. What is his story? He doesn't seem to be a member of the Forum. I know nothing about him but his cool tone and some of his resume. _________________ RICK ABBOTT

I saw Bobby with the good commander in '76.
Bobby was excellent that night. In fact, the `We've Gotta Live One Here` album, was recorded on that tour.
Here's Bobby's site:

Bobby is alive and well here in the Bay Area and can be seen with many bands. Some are the Saddle Cats, Lost Weekend and Gary Vogenson. I hear he sits in with Bill Kirchen when he comes to town. I saw him a few years ago at a Lost Planet Airmen reunion show.

Rick, Bobby is a member of the International HOF and one of the nicest gentlemen to visit with. I'm looking forward to seeing him, I hope, in Phoenix. Bobby plays it all, Jazz, rock, country, swing, Hawaiian, you name it. He seems to enjoy his privacy, but live is a different story. _________________ Ray Harrison

you don't play in california and not know bobby....he and jd are the california steel legends!
crossed bobby's path a hundred times at fairs, festivals, clubs, etc. seems like the sweetest guy in the universe..and his rockin' swing playing on the commander's stuff is a difficult lesson for us all! |

Bobby is not only alive but playing great these days (mostly non-pedal) and he still looks 30 years younger than his chronological age. He's been one of my role models for at least 30 years now (sometimes nice guys do finish first). I see Bobby playing great 20 years from now. |

I can't say enough good about Bobby Black. He's a consumate musician,a fine gentleman and a friend. He was a guest in my home during the events surrounding the death of Joaquin Murphey and played beautifully at Murph's funeral. His induction into the SGHOF was well deserved and I was fortunate enough to witness that event. Love Ya Bobby. |

I think most of us should aspire to be as good a player and as nice a guy as Bobby is. |

Bobby Black plays all the steel styles. E9th country. C6th jazz. dobro, non pedal Hawaiian and Western Swing, six string lap 12 string lap. Bobby also sings leads and harmony. A very well rounded musician indeed. He is very good at expalaining what he does on the steel. Bobby is also a great raconteur, he can tell some stories!!!! |

Here's a link to one of the bands Bobby Black plays with currently.... if you catch this band, you will hear one of the finest swing bands playing today... and Bobby only plays his Fender console (no need for pedals when you play like he does... but of course he's killer on his Carter D10 as well). But more to the point, notice how many folks here are responding about what a great person Bobby Black is.... simply one of the best is all I can say!
