Does anybody know what happened to magnatone guitars and amps??? Did they sell; or go out of bus., or just quit?? I have a lap steel I would like to get rostored. John |

John, I love Dickerson/Magnatone lap steels. They sound and play great for the money. You used to see them on e-bay all the time, but it looks like they have pretty much dried up and the prices I've seen now are too high IMHO. |

Prices too high? Ah, I think you've got it reversed. For a guitar that was from the 40's and 50's, they were always too LOW. They're just now starting to get closer to what they're really worth -- you guys are right -- they're great frickin' guitars.

I don't know what kind of restoration you had in mind, but I just remembered there was a recent thread on where to find the MOTS plastic material -

I have a MOTS Magnatone that I really like, too - it has a nice warm, resonant sound - I don't know if it's because of the lightweight wood they used, or the pickup, or what.

Shh... Now everyone's going to be bidding on them, play up the "Rickenbackers" instead!
My Magnatone is a grey MOTS "Varsity", with clear tuning peg and tone/volume knobs and a red pickguard/handrest thing. Since it's my only lap steel SO FAR, I don't know what to compare it to. What was originally on the back of these, I assume some kind of felt? Mine's been worn off or removed sometime between the Eisenhower administration and today. |
