Yes, Mother's, Simichrome, or Meguire's all make metal polishes that will bring back the shine. But, you must mask off the spaces between the tops of the fingers so that the polish does not get into the changer! Any polish contains abrasives, which will accelerate wear if they migrate down into the changer (between the axle and fingers). Cut narrow strips of tape and place them between the fingers, and use the polish sparingly, and you'll be fine.  Note that this process is far easier if you use a Dremel or similar rotary tool with a small buffing wheel. |

| I would suggest that you leave it alone unless you are absolutely sure that it hurts your tone. Those marks from the windings on the big strings won't hurt anything, and you would probably damage the changer if you scraped off enough metal to make it smooth. Then it would just happen again anyway. |

I use Mothers, but I only do the aluminum parts and not the fingers. Don't want to chance getting some down in the changer. That can't be good. When I think of it (which is not often enough), I have a wash cloth I carry to wipe my..., ummm... strings off, and I place it over the C6th changer and strings to not let the sweat from my arm get on the strings and changer housing. I have thought of asking Leann Sharp (Sharp Covers) if she could make a little cover for the changer area.

I'm sure there are many players out there including myself that are plagued with this same problem. This makes a good argument for placing the lesser used neck (C6?) on the top so as to remedy this. I sometimes wonder why the existing placement has continued for so long when it so obviously contributes to the tarnishing of the inside neck. Would it just feel too weird to have E9 on the inside neck? Maybe only to those who have used the "standard" setup for so long, methinks.   |
