I went to an estate auction this weekend. There were many stringed instruments on this Auction.Among them was a single neck rosewood mica Zumsteel 3&4. You can bet I jumped on this baby The family said it has not been played for 30 years :eek:It is in good shape just needs a real good cleaning and thourough lube job.Anything else that should be done before I restring it and try her out?The pull on the 4th string changer is sort of gummy and slow
could this guitar have been in the case for 30 years? I know it is an older model really built like a tank! _________________ The Lone Prairie Steeler Pat |

Patrick, I am sure you can find some good advice for this somewhere on the forum but I would encourage you to call Bruce during normal business hours, he almost always answers the phone himself and is a good guy and would be glad to help you I am sure. |

Patrick,
Just flush the changer with a mild solvent such as mineral spirits, work the fingers back and forth several times and repeat the process a few times over the course of about a day. It helps if you can put the changer over a pan of some sort. Blow it out with compressed air (gently) if possible, being careful not to blow crud all over the underside of the guitar or the wifes clean sink...... When you are satisfied that it is clean lube it by drizzling automatic transmission fluid down between the changer fingers. Work them back and forth and tilt the guitar from front to back several times to work it all in. Wipe off the excess and enjoy that old guitar!! Or sell it to me. _________________ Doug Earnest

I spoke to Bruce Zumsteg at Zumsteel Guitars,he said the guitar was born in 1981. Bruce also suggested using carbuerator cleaner and compessed air on the changer this has freed it up.I have lubbed it with Scotty's Steel Guitar Lubricant.
This really is a neat guitar. Plays and sounds like a dream
Ya, Casey it feels good to get lucky for once!!
Doug I think I will just keep the Zum the price was right!! _________________ The Lone Prairie Steeler Pat |
