does anyone know which dobro tunings were favored by buddy emmons, james burton and rusty young? i've heard them do cool stuff but not necessarily traditional G tuning sounding.

This is the first time I've seen this message. I'm really surprised that it was posted on last Friday, because I certainly didn't see it before now.

Anyway, I'd guess open D (or open E) would be the alternative tuning that these guys would have used if they weren't using open G. Without knowing which particular songs you're talking about, it's hard to say for sure.
