My computer came pre-loaded with Norton Internet Security, which is now about to expire if I don't renew.

I am under the impression that Norton is not the best, and that possibly some that are free are superior.

I know this subject is frequently addressed, but information in past threads might not reflect the current state of the "market".

I would appreciate any input on what seem to be the best options at present.

Thanks in advance.

For several years now I've just been using AVG Free Anti-virus along with WinXP's built-in firewall. I haven't had any problems and I'm quite happy with the setup.

AVG gets my vote too. I've uninstalled Norton on three different computers and installed AVG and so far it works great. It updates itself automatically and I thought I read that AVG uses less memory too so that's a plus.

I use 2 freebies, AVAST antivirus and
Comodo firewall with the malware utility from the same company.

I'm still running window 2000 at home.
If I were running XP, what Will said about the Windows firewall.

I've used AVG, too, with no complaints.

Many will argue that you "get what you pay for" with security programs. Most of the "feebie" programs also offer a pay version that includes more features and better protection. Same way with the firewall programs and the SPAM blocking programs.

Just as we argue about which brand of strings is better, there are arguments about which anti-virus program is better.
