Does anyone know who is building quality modern lap steel stands suitable for a heavy fry pan style lap steel? Thanks....... |

Andy and Rick,
Thank you for the heads up. I also found this one;
http://www.harmosmusic.com/models/accessories.htm
Now all I have to do is decide. There maybe a few others to consider as well.
The one Don makes would be good for Rick Aiello because of his height. He stated the old vintage originals do not get high enough for standing. That stand would accommodate a 7' tall player. It's actually more of a table that can hold a whole arsenal of equipment. (even a cold beer)
Rick Aiello has a surprise ready to be revealed to the public.....but it's already SOLD ;o) |

I'm bringing mine to Joliet for Rick to try out.
They are really well made and they are quite versatile.
And portable:

Forum member Steve Miller brought his "Burrows" over ... and I wanted to "steel" it ...
Standing up (I'm 6'3) .. it felt perfect ... swayed ever so gently ... with my vibrato.
I was in love ...
That's what I want for my Christmas present ... |

I am using a projector stand, I added some rubber matting to the top to make the guitar stick in place. The legs are adjustable to a height I couldn't reach... about $50 |

The Morrell stand is a waste of money in my opinion.
The legs are too unstable. The distance is too close and with a rather heavy steel on top (ricky) it could tip over in a breeze. I promptly returned mine.
The Burrows stand is very cool. I have yet to order one because I am enjoying playing the old fashioned way right now. Well that and I have a keyboard where my stand would go right now... |

G-man is right about the Morell stands, they're not too stable and many guitars don't fit on them.
All they are is a keyboard stand with an attachment.
I've pretty much tried 'em all, and the Burrows BSG Stand works the best.
And it holds 2 lap steels - how can you beat that? |

Plus it looks like you could sleep on it too. In case the wife locks you out for being late after a gig. |

Or if she kicks you out for spending over $300 for a stand... |

Ive seen the Burrows and it is indeed an awesome stand. I can totally understand why someone wanting quality, durablitlty etc would go for one. Since quality wasnt a big concern for me I went with a $9.99 keyboard stand, it matches my $5 pedalboard and i can fit my microkorg keyboard (not pictured) on there at the same time. thats my old guitar pedalboard so its overkill for lap, hell... its overkill for guitar frankly.

Keith, what stand are you using? I've looked on the web and found the "Tabletote" for like $60 which seems like the right thing, but only extends to 30", which I don't think is high enough to use standing up. There's also one called the "Da-Lite Project-o Stand" that looks great, but is like $130... And the Testrite pro-view which is even a little more.
Any lines on something in between? Like $60-80 that extends up to 36" or more? It just seems like something you should be able to find... |

I bought this one. Add a board covered with carpet and you are in there. It holds 230 pounds! You can sit under it or stand up as there is a lot of adjustments. The reviews are good.

You cannot sit under those very well. I like my knees to be able to move around and they do not have adjustments for sitting and/or standing.
Anyway, I do not use an iron and haven't for years.... |

Al Marcus used to take 2 bar stools and place his case across them,
then drape a piece of black velvet over the case down to the floor.
That was when he played a New Yorker, back in the good ol' days.
Pretty darn resourceful if you ask me . . |

For my 8 string I use a heavy duty camera tripod that was used with a 4"X5" Graflex Press Camera. I attached a plywood plate, covered with felt to the tripod and the felt on the back of my lap steel sticks almost like velcro. I will post a picture if requested. James |

Mine is a Da-Lite, there are different sizes available. I find them used all the time, I'll keep an eye out for you. They extend to about 8 feet high... |

For playing lap steel standing up I have a music stand, the sort where the top is plain metal, with a lip at right angles. I drilled holes in it, to which I bolt two identical lap steels. If you don't want to insert leg sockets in the lap steels you can use velcro. |
