There is a prewar National D8 console now on Ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7369418074&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1
Anyone ever played one of these?
How do they sound?
What's it worth?

Richard, I've been looking at that - it looks amazing. I have a '30s single 8 New Yorker, which is one half of that one more or less. It sounds great, especially since I put Aiello NIBs in it. It has a very sweet chimey sound. The string spacing is a little tight, but you can get used to it.

I don't know what that D8 is worth - at least $1,000 I would guess. The single 8 was about $800 last year on eBay. It's in great condition - these guitars were built to last. Here's a pic -

Hey Rick: I have the same guitar as yours. I also have the matching amp (the tweed on the amp matches the guitar case). The original warranty card is in the case too. I jokingly asked Don Young at the current National company if he would still honor my warranty! I've contemplated one of the D8's for a while, but the Ebay one has a few too many issues for me. Howard--I hope you're not abusing any of my ex-girlfriends!

It must have been a New Yorker "pluckonic" relationship. Or was it more serious, Howard.

Your friend,
Don

Everyone's a comedian! Shhheesh!

Don, wasn't there a lady in Joliet who played a D8 National New Yorker this year? I came in towards the end of her/their set.

I have two prewar New Yorkers. They're slightly different but they both have the sixpack pups. I like both very much.
I guess I asked the wrong questions, sound, price etc.

I'm a collector mostly and a six string player for all practical purposes. I have a couple of eight string units, but I haven't quite figured out how I might need that many strings yet. I guess my 40+ year blues roots, I'm almost 60, have either made me lazy or my current day job keeps me from persuing the strings further(Pretty bad excuses, but they're the best I have.).

I have lots of steels (no doubles) and I don't want many more, but this one's got me a little short of breath.

No, not at all. I've owned mine for about 4 years. Got it on ebay. Paid around $700.00+ and was happy to score it. These are fairly rare and you don't see them often at all.

I could have bought one two years prior to this one for less, but, I didn't want to pay the $600.00+. It was two years until this one surfaced.

Soundwise, the old NYKrs are not on the top of my list. Perhaps I like a more modern sound with a definate separation and brightness. The D8 is a bit too mellow for me. My late 50s 6 string NYKr on the other hand, has a sound & tone that I enjoy more.

They're classic steels and have an eye appeal to them for sure. I love how the keyheads turn opposite from each other on the D8.

I'll agree with Rick, at least 1K....but anything can happen on ebay.

I think there's an extra Pickup under the end of the fretboard ? and that explains the strange names and switching.. I think ?

Getting back to what Howard asked:

Howard, I believe that would be Bernice Honhold. She plays in the group called the Coral Islanders.

Aloha,
Don

Are the 1/4" outputs original. My T8 Console had the amphenol connector. I had to convert it to 1/4".
