Here's a link to an article about hip-hop lap steel:

I don't know anything about Brenner or Jenkins or Slo Mo, but some of you might find this interesting.

I haven't heard this project but Mike Brenner is a good dobro and lap steel player. I think he comes from a rock background, and he knows bluegrass and traditional country styles, too. Nice guy and a good all around musician.

Cool--thanks for posting that.

Interesting to see/hear steel guitar in atypical settings. I don't listen to much rap, but when I do hear it I like when it's done to real instruments. Also refreshing to hear the artists' emphasis on positivity in their music.

Cool to see lap steel getting into more modern music.

Tori Amos has a tune on her new album with some lap.
Check out http://www.toriamos.com/ and forward the player to Big Wheel

Mike "Slo Mo" Brenner is a smokin' lap steel player that is very impressive in a rootsy groove somewhere between bluegrass and blues. Unfortunately he is sort of a Philly secret. His experimental stuff is always interesting, and it is not surprising to see him getting into some hip hop with his own twist. :)

I've been doing hip-hop and R&B sessions for about a year, and the folks I've worked with love the lap steel. It's a lot of fun, and they give me free reign to experiment.

You can check out Mike Brenner and Slo-Mo here: http://www.myspace.com/heyslomo

He's a sweet cat and a really nice player with a vision.

Good stuff! I grew up in Philly in the 60s & 70s and this music definitely reminds me of that lineage of classic, melodic, orchestrated Philly soul and R&B. Great to know the steel is making inroads in this kind of music.
