I'm curious about Fender pedal steels. I'd be interested to hear from anyone who owns or has owned one about how they played and other aspects of them.

If you do a search of the forum archives search you will find lots of info regarding Fender steels.

They are a lot different than the modern steels that were made from the mid 1960's to the present.

Isn't there a secret-handshake little fender-fan sub forum attached to this forum somwhere? I recall Jim and that crew talking about setting one up 6 months ago?

Nope. For me, it's not about the "name", it's about playing an instrument that's constructed with significant differences. Rodded guitars are one thing, and cable guitars are quite another.

Too late. I didn't see there might be a discussion about it. Already signed up. Sorry if it offends, that is not my intent. I just want to play steel guitar. But I am sure I will have questions from time to time. Like when I am on my own and need to change a string or replace a pot. I can't depend on my "musican's mechanic" forever. If I'm gonna play it, I should learn to maintain it, at least the basics. I am also sure there is an "upgrade" in the future, I just don't know when.

There's one for sale here in LA @Westwood music. Don't know anything more.

Stephen: the best thing to do always with a wide-open question like that is NOT ask, but use the "search" feature. There have been innumerable threads about Fender guitars.

Honestly, your question is hard to answer because we don't know what your experience is, whether you play at all, or what you really want to know. There are NO simple ansers when it comes to Fenders, because the answer depends first on WHAT Fenders you mean - the cable-pull models or the later Shobud-made rodded guitars - and what you want to do with one.

The first question HAS to be answered first, as the guitars are night and day.

The second question is then vital - because one type works well for certain playing styles and "adventurous" types (and/or vintage guitar freaks); the other is more "normal.

So let's get those two things answered:

1. What "Fender Pedal Steel" are you talking about?

2. What type of music are you interested in, and what's your playing background?

That will save at least 50 posts in this thread. An hour of searching and reading will save another 25 or so, at least. Also feel free to email if you're not quite sure why I'm asking for clarification or what I mean.

I will as soon as I can get some photo's offer my prize of a 1000 8 pedal steel. This guitar has the dominoe square Jazzmaster pickups and there is NOT one nick or ding on the body or chrome parts. I had asked Leo Fender to make me one in sunburst but with out the Mahogany to Orange to Yellow finish. This 1000 has a satin finish and is a mellow shade of light maple. It was played by myself years ago and has been stashed away in my special place here at home. Brown Tolex cases immaculate and has hog hooks. This is a (ONE OF A KIND) Tuning keys pefect as is all of this baby. Have to sell, I have more steel guitar than I need and with advancing age,I feel it would be best for it to find someone who would appreciate this special 1000. Will have photos soon.

Ron Victoria was going to come up here and take photo's but he wasn't able to.I won't give this 1000 away...It was Leo's pride and joy and my idea as to the finish on this great steel. I received this just before the end of the Fender 1000 with the chrome pedals, Nuff said. Be on the lookout for it.

You are making me drool thinking about that 1000. I KNOW I won't be able to afford it....but I do want to see detailed pics and have them for my files. Sure wish I could play it. Sure wish I had some good Lotto numbers...........
