Topic: Torn Rotator Cuff Surgery Information? |

| I am going in this week to have my shoulder operated on as I can no longer sleep on my right side or raise my right arm behind my back without constant pain. Has anybody here in the Forum had that operation ? I am kind of apprehensive about doing it and I could still call it off...all input appretiated...Pete |

Surgery is usually dictated by an extreme injury (a severe tear), or other serious joint problems (such as calcium deposits). I tore mine (either throwing, or at the driving range), about 7 years ago, and I just put up with the moderate pain and not being able to sleep on that side for for about 3 or 4 years. Eventually (after the constant pain went away), I felt as if I was about 90% recouperated, and settled for that. Rarely does it bother me these days...as much as all my other "problems".  |

| I guess what I was wondering was the eternal question did that pain, which you say you endured for three years, keep you from FULLY living your life or is it just an "inconvenience" that you figured would go away. The question here is the value of your time: If an operation could give you back three years of sleeping on your favorite side and removal of the pain is it worth risking?. Also I wondered whether someoneon the Forum had actually had the operation..Thanks for responding.Pete |

I had that surgery 3 years ago after suffering for 30 years. I wish I had had it done years ago.My right shoulder is like it was when I was a teeny Bopper. It took a good year to heal 100% but it feel great now.

I had the surgury back in '93. Injured myself pitching batting practice to my little league team. I lived with the pain for a couple years, but couldn't throw without pain, it hurt to play acoustic guitar and worst of all it hurt when I had wrapped my arm around a woman, slow dancing.
Today my shoulder is stronger than before the surgery (as a result of therapy) and I have no pain at all. The doctor who did my surgery was the orthopedist for the MN Twins.
The recovery was long (six months), but I experienced no pain post surgery. They healing and rehab process is long. I was restricted from using a computer mouse for a few weeks and even lifting a can of soda. |

| Went in at 11:30 yesterday morning for surgery and they found a huge bone spur on my clavicle sticking ino my rotator cuff muscle...the surgery took three and a half hours. sorry about no capitals im doing this with one hand. the doctor thinks the bone spur caused the tear and in this case not operating would have been the worst choice i could make. the funniest thing about the whole experience was people kept asking me who i was and which shoulder they were operating on....i guess they have had a few errors lately...well im going to take a pain pill and listen to buddy play blue jade....regards peter |

| The last couple of surgeries I've had (including the shoulder) they had me mark the body part to be operated on with a Sharpie. I guess if they operated on the wrong body part it would be my own fault. |
