| hi everyone. i'm new to the forum. i focus my playing on guitar and play mostly fingerstyle delta and piedmont blues. i would like to add some lap steel to my blues reporatoir. what tunings would be a good place to start. thanks in advance for any advice. |

Waz up Dale! I stricly play blues and use open D. Not only for my lap steels but for my electric guitars and acoustics too. It's got a growl that can't be beat! Unless you go lower, then you probally want a baritone scale. Since you play blues too, you really don't have too many options, oh boy, I know I'm starting controversy, but the major tunings like open D and G are the way to go for the blues...if ya want to get a little jazzy, throw in a dominent 7th somewhere.

Welcome, Dale.
Brad's steel pages, on the link provided by Andy, has more tunings than you can shake a stick at. I recommend trying a bunch, even if you settle on the one you're already using.

Hi Dale...I play lap in 2 blues bands & use open E or D & the tunings work great.
(E = EBEG#BE...Low to High)
(D = DADF#AD)

| thanks for the quick and informative responses. i have been using open e. just seemed real safe to tune to this and "barre chord" my way through it at first. any suggestions on some "blues instruction" sources? thanks everyone, nice to be a member of the board. |

| I am also a bit of a blues player, and I play 8 string. My tuning is taken from Darick Campbell's Sacred Steel DVD, B*E*B*E*G#*B*C#*E. It is extremely versatile and leaves open a lot of possibilities for chord vamping and soloing. Tons of fun to play with. |
