A non-peddler doing his best can be heard on "About Ray"s page of the Jerry Byrd Fan Club. Sounds to me like he's playing a Rickenbacher Bakelite or Trot-Mor. What do you think?
Any idea WHO this great steeler is? Where is he now, anyone know? Let's hear from you. |

I'm not sure who it is, but I can say one thing, I can't stop listening to it!!!  What a great tune!
I'm going to take a guess:
The great Ray Montee from Portland on his Bigsby...?
or
Maybe Buddy Emmons back when he played his Bigsby?

The first verse (theme) of that instrumental brings to mind an effect that Jerry used in his famous arrangement of Steel Guitar Rag. He does it on a full verse towards the end.
Anyway I note this player uses Jerry's three string slant also so he was abviously influenced by the master.

I have Wigglewag on the Don Gibson RCA Camden album "A Blue Million Tears". I assume that Hendrick is the player.
The arrangement on the JBFC is very similar to the one on the album, but not exactly.

I met Summie Lee Hendrick in 1986, when Stoney Stonecipher brought him to The ISGC.
He played a S-10 MSA steel guitar w/o pedals, but I believe he had 4 knee levers on his guitar. His playing seemed to have a Joaquin Murphy influence.

Finally, a couple of you guys got your music ears on.......and proferred the correct identity of the steel player.
Yes, it was THE Don Gibson, on RCA and the flip side is "Dark Future" and obviously it was his steel player. The series of recordings include "Red Lips, White Lies and Blue Hours"; "Just Let Me Love You"; "A Dark Future"; and of course, "Wiggle Wag"........one of the first times of which I'm aware, that a STAR VOCALIST allowed a sideman to record an instrumental.
