I'm considering refinishing my 59' D-8. It is yellow now but was painted by someone with a spraycan so it has drips and tons of dirt in the paint. It's painted yellow on top of some baby blue color. Both of these colors are chipping off very easily down to what looks like a walnut finish. The wood is dark but not very dark. I guess it's walnut color. They painted it in order to cover the holes that were made through the tuner pan for pedals that are gone now.

Could you guys post some close up pictures of walnut finishes so I can have examples to copy from? I am most interested in the color fade areas. It seems that the color goes from dark to darker on the edges but I want to be sure.

Thanks,

Steve

Hi, Steve, this one seems to be a uniform dark chocolate brown over walnut. Sunlight makes it appear much lighter. http://steelguitarforum.com/Forum9/HTML/002096.html

Sorry I don't have any pics, but I've owned four "dark" Stringmasters, and they all varied in finish. My '56 was more brown, with little red, and the grain was visible, even though it was dark. My '60 was lighter and more reddish in color, with a bit of shading (like in a burst). I had one ('60's I think), with a dark brown finish that was more opaque. So if you can get a few pics, you might choose something in the same range, based on your preferences. But then blonde (or any other color for that matter) is an option since you are stripping off the old finish.
