Are there any pro players out there that would be willing to set up a videocam for two-way online lessons? Payment would be easy, and there wouldn't be any calling charges using the internet. I'd sure sign up, and I'll bet there'd be a long line very quickly! Think of it: lessons in the comfort of home, connected by videocam and sound each way. The necessary equipment isn't terribly expensive. Any takers? _________________ Oh, what the heck...I'll try it again tomorrow... |

I do believe that Rick Alexander has already done that on Youtube. |

I don't mean a post on YouTube; I mean an interactive lesson, where a cam is set up for teacher AND for student, enabling each to see and hear, resulting in a live "virtual" lesson online. _________________ Oh, what the heck...I'll try it again tomorrow... |

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Mickey Adams will do something exactly like that. Like..set it up via Skype so you can do a 3-way call and teach 2 students at the same time .Or one way for more personal instruction.
The possibilities are endless |

Hmmm, I never thought of it that way. I would suggest going over to Steel Without Pedals and contacting Rick. He his very receptive to helping others learn to play the steel guitar. |

Hi Sandy, are you going to be at the steel show in Tiverton, RI on Sep 23? If so, I'd be interested in talking with you about this. (Of course we could also talk by phone...) |

Hi, Jim! I was just rehearsing last night with Mike Ihde (we're doing a Tammy Wynette tribute in Gettysburg, PA Friday night, and I'm on steel)...he mentioned the Tiverton show...I wasn't aware of it until then. I'd love to back you up! Send me the details, song list, etc...I'll see you there! _________________ Oh, what the heck...I'll try it again tomorrow... |

I just met with Mickey Adams here in Dallas. What a great player and person he is. He may do something like that but what he has in mind right now is putting together a dvd course which IMO would be cool, showing fret movements, pedal and knee action. |

check out Ed Byrne's site at

for an example of how this setup would work. It's tailor-made for the steel guitar world! _________________ Oh, what the heck...I'll try it again tomorrow... |

Really, all that's needed is a Webcam, a free service like Yahoo Messenger, and a predetermined block of time. When I get this setup, I'll try it out with somebody, and report the results. _________________ Oh, what the heck...I'll try it again tomorrow... |

Sandy, I've been steelin over the net via a web cam for a while now. With MSN Messenger, there has been for me, a second or so delay, something you'll need to get use to. Skype is now my preferred method for web camming. Better audio and video response! I also suggest you use a head set which will eliminate feed back. All of this has been my most recent experience while jammming with some folks over in Finland.

That's great, Gary! Is it worth the extra $$$ to get a high quality cam? I figured that a headset would be best under any circumstances, feedback notwithstanding...I can't wait to get the stuff I need, and make some connections. Technologically speaking, are there any little quirks you've come across while jamming? I have Broadband (I can't imagine trying to do this with dialup), but I was wondering if you've had to deal with any kind of interruptions...does Skype charge for their webcam connection? Thanks for your info; I'm really excited that this could be a great way for steelers to get personal lessons from great players, anywhere in the world. _________________ Oh, what the heck...I'll try it again tomorrow... |

I just thought of something else, Gary...is it possible to do a direct hookup of your steel? _________________ Oh, what the heck...I'll try it again tomorrow... |

Sandy, I use a Logitech 5500 PRo, at least I believe that is the model. I'm at the day gig now, pushing pencils and shuffling papers, so I may be off on the correct model #. Anyway, for sure its a Logitech with a cost of 80 beans. Within the web cam software, there is a link to download Skype and the use is FREE! There are some set up preferences that you should be aware of. After you load your web cam software & go through the audio and video checks, you'll need to set some other preferences. In the control panel, select Sound and Audio Devices. Click the Audio tab and then drop down box for recording and then select Logitech. Do the same thing under the voice tab. Finally, locate the tiny speaker icon that is at the bottom right of your computer. Double click and view the mixer, making sure nothing has been muted. Audio and video settings in Messenger can only be adjusted when you are not on line, but must be done. Skype works either way, I think.

I have seen this done with some other instruments. I would suggest the instructor make a "test" connection to determine if both computers and internet service was up to par for it. This does take a good connection, not dial-up and quite a bit of ram memory to make it smooth. I think it is the wave of the future. |

Sandy,
I agree with Gary Lee re Skype. I have used Skype now for 2 years for the majority of my long distance and overseas phone calls and Skype-to-Skype calls. The clarity is unbelievable. All you need is a fairly fast connection(dial-up won't do)
The video part is very nice and clear if both you and the other party have fast connections. Even with my cheap $30 web cam, the pictures are quite amazing.
Yes, there is a built-in delay of a couple of seconds. This you will get used to.
I absolutely believe that this will be the steel (or any)instruction method of the future.
As for equipment.. You can never go wrong with Logitech, both cam and headset.
Hope this helps in some way.

Sandy you have hit on something that would be very cool since I am a new steel player! I don't have a camera but would get something very quickly if lessons of this nature were available.
Hey Gary and Jim. If you are interested in something let me know, you both know how to find me. |

Sandy; something else that has been bantied around on the SGF off and on is the growing legal problem of giving public lessons on open media access facilities using someone else's copywrited material.
Just something else to let float around in the back of your mind as you contiue to develope your idea. I do like your concept however. |

Les, I believe the growth was limited to a few web sites that offered free tab and that was last year. |

and to tell differences between msn messenger and skype what i have come to is following:
msn messenger
+ audio and video quality
+ not so much delay if the network isnt slow
+ no gating on audio
- the feedback with speakers on
- messenger take more of broadband than skype
Skype
+ audio and video quality
+ better phone conversations
+ no feedback
- gating on audio(especialy if you play steel guitar etc. online)
it would be fun to have more of these online playings so send pm's if someones interrested _________________ Sandwich Productions

Actually this isn't something new. Several years ago
the man who built the Cougar steel guitars had a online lesson site. I started with it and continued until he died a few months after I started. I remember it being very informative. |
