I'm hoping that someone can help me out, finding out more info on a Dobro that my guitar player buddy just bought at a pawn shop.

It is supposed to be a 1963 model, roundneck, and it looks authentic to me. It is a metal body, and has the number 01262 on the end of the headstock. Does anyone know how to trace these, or find out more info on them?

Thanks a lot for any help,

It's unlikely that it's a 1963 Dobro -- the company only built metal-bodied guitars between 1935 and 1940, and then again after 1970. (After curtailing production at the outbreak of World War II, the Dopyeras began building wood-bodied "DB Original" guitars in the late 1950s, and reintroduced the Dobro name in 1965.) The serial number doesn't match any of the Dobro numbering schemes I'm aware of, but Dobro serial numbers seem to be harder to track than some other brands.

You can read more about the older Dobro metal guitars, and the company's serial numbers here.

Can you post some pictures? If not, send me an e-mail and I'll try to help identify your friend's guitar.
