Is this usual to have the case as the body of the instrument?

Unusual indeed Richard, I've never seen one like it. Is it yours?

The only other one I've seen is a Harmony with case and amp/speaker built right in. This one one would require patience when it comes to winding up the strings when new ones are put on.

Richard, that particular model is in the Selmer Catalog of 1939 along with a matching amplifier..I think yours is POST War, as the pick-up with pole-pieces wasn't added to that model until the 50's.. NICE FIND..!!

Wow!!.
I didn't think it was the same age as me!!
I bought it from a secondhand shop several years ago, it's only lately that I've aquired a digital camera and taught myself how to put photos on the net.
(The Pedal Steel section is awash with my photos!)
Basil, I'm impressed with your knowledge.

Can you imagine it Richard ?
Mastermind 2006 contestant Basil Henric,x,d ?? whatever..
specialist subject UK lap steels from 1936 onwards !!
Could they find 20 questions, probably just about..SO not really such impressive knowledge, as knowing a lot about a little as opposed to a little about a lot !! (Go figure)
BTW the first ones selmer sold had GENUINE RICKY Horse-shoe pickups..That's where Roland Peachy sourced the pickups for his "Abbott" constructed three neck 30" scale length monster..
