Lloyd Maines is a legendary steel guitar player who has been around for many years. He created some timeless instructional material that may still be available. However, in all the time I have been following the instrument, I have never had the opportunity to see Lloyd play. I do not believe he plays any of the shows, and now he is a very highly regarded, grammy winning, producer in Texas, so live appearances are undoubtedly rare. Good News for those of us who live in Norther California! Lloyd will be appearing with Terri Hendrix On Friday, November 9 at Studio E in Sebastopol, California (www.northbaylive.com), a small, intimate venue that seems to specialize in hosting many of the talented singer/songwriter/musicians who call Texas home. I contacted Laurie Schaeffer, one of the promoters, and asked whether she knew if Lloyd would be playing steel (he apparently plays anthing with strings). She told me that he appeared with Terri Hendrix a couple of years ago and played lap steel. That's good enough for me. I am going. I am not that familiar with Terri's music, which has been described as "upbeat rock-country-pop-roots-blues music," but there should be something there for everyone. Also, see her website at http://www.terrihendrix.com/.

By the way, here is what Wikipedia has to say about Lloyd:
"Lloyd Maines (born June 28, 1951) is a country music musician and producer. He grew up in Acuff, Texas and Lubbock, Texas. Based in Austin, Texas, he is a legendary pedal steel guitar player, and also plays dobro and guitar. He worked with Joe Ely in the 1970s and was also a member of The Maines Brothers Band in the late 1970s to early 1980s. Maines also played steel and Dobro on Jake Kellen's album "Take Me Home" in 2005. He played pedal steel guitar on Uncle Tupelo's last album Anodyne.

Lloyd is the father of Natalie Maines, lead singer of the Dixie Chicks. He is also an accomplished record producer, and an important player in the establishment of the Texas music movement. Some of his notable recording projects include Terri Hendrix, Wayne Hancock, Pat Green and Two Tons of Steel.

Maines won a Grammy Award for Best Country Album in 2003 for the Dixie Chicks' Home."

One last thing. Lloyd produces Wayne "the Train" Hancock, one of my favorites. Wayne usually appears in northern California at least once each year (usually the Mystic Theater in Petaluma). Unfortunately, he usually does not have a steel player with him. However, the one time that I saw him and he did, it was Jeremy Wakefield,a real phenom. However, check out Wayne's latest CD, Tulsa (a nice mix of old time country and hillbilly swing)for some killer guitar work (Paul Skelton and Dave Biller) and some of the most tasteful lapsteel work I have heard from Eddie Rivers.
