I've noticed on some lap steels, the output jack is on the player's side. What's everyone's opinion as to whether this is good, bad or indifferent? Looks to me like the cord would get in the way.

Doesn't bother me either way. I think it is a matter of esthetics - do you want the audience to see your guitar jack plugged in or not. I could see how someone with a big belly or not much of a lap could have problems, though.

There doesn't seem to be a standard location as far as I can tell on any of the steels I've seen. Even some of the older "non-jack" types (you know, a cord coming straight out of the instrument) seem to come out wherever. On my two steels have the jack on the side away from the player (one is straight up, the other "out")
I don't think I've ever seen them coming out of the underside of the instrument, logical if you use a stand though I suppose it could get in the way if you strictly play on your lap. Another "logical" location (from a player's point of view, not necessarily the builder, I guess) I've not seen is coming out of the "lower bout" |
