While I am recuperating from a recent tumble down the stairs with a Twin Reverb in my arms, I received an video e-mail from a friend in Manchester, England. It has a film interview with David Gilmour talking about playing lap steel using a (low to high) DGDGBE tuning on most of his guitars including a natural finish EH? with what looks to be a P90 pickup.
I'll try convert the file so it can be shared.

That's the tuning I started on many years ago when I got my first steel (a Fender Champion for $50) I didn't know anything about steel tunings so I just lowered the bottom 3 strings a whole step. You get the huge 5151 power chord that works for majors or minors, a minor triad, a major triad, a minor 7, and a major 6 all with a straight bar. And the top 4 strings are still the same as guitar tuning so you're in familiar territory. I actually thought I'd invented the tuning! I still have the Champion and it's still tuned like that.

And all you have to do is lower the high E to D and you have G bass tuning.

I always thought it was EBEGBE 5th chord on bottom and Minor on top and the DGDGBE for older stuff.
