I recently received a couple of open-back 15" cabinets from Rick and I just have to say the craftsmanship is incredible and the service was first-class. I have always favored open-back speaker cabinets for steel, and after a stint playing with a closed-back cabinet, I decided I wanted to try an open back design once again. So I emailed Rick with some ideas and he fixed me up in a big way. These things sound great (must be the pine  ), and the fit and finish is just superb!
Now I want to get him to build cabinets for everything in the studio...!

| Rick just made me a pair of 15" cabs and an amp head with cream colored tolex and a wheat gold grill cloth. Takes your breath away just looking at them. |

First let me say, they look great. Question, looks like solid wood[pine maybe] is there an advantage/disadvantage of solid wood rather than plywood?

My new Rick Johnson cab in the hands of UPS now! I can't wait. It's a 1x15 and I've got a new Weber Neomag 15 for it. I'm excited to be trying out Ted's brand new take on a JBL. When I get it broken in, I'll be looking for someone in the Austin/Central Texas area who has a real JBL in a 1x15 cab for comparison. The speaker itself is quite light, so my cab will be just fine for an aging musician...

of my ability.

To answer your question, I like to use
#2 Common Pine for guitar cabinets.
Pine has a inherent resonant tone that
I like, for comparison sake years ago,
I made a cabinet from birch plywood and
the sound was too thin and brittle and maybe somewhat harsh.
I don't want to argue about pine vs. plywood.
I just like plain old pine.
Just my opinion.
