Just visited Elderly yesterday and picked up my new Vox DA-10 amp.
I brought my DA-5 equipped with fresh batteries and a set of fresh C batteries for the DA-10. I took both amps into a quiet lesson room to AB them. I wanted to AB them both using batteries because that is the way I use these amps 99% of the time
I first played through the DA-5 for about a minute and then set the controls exactly the same on the DA-10 and played through it.
Result: The DA-10 is fuller sounding. The difference is noticeable. More bass response probably due to the larger closed cabinet. Also the DA-10 is a bit more hi-fi sounding probably due to the two speakers.
Either it has grown on me or it does really look OK, but the cheese-grater chrome front doesn't look so bad on the bigger box of the DA-10.
My DA-5 is now going off to college with my son in a few weeks.
I know Derrick Mau tried the DA-20 at Elderly last week and heard no difference with the DA-5 but perhaps he should of gone into a quiet area for the test.
I bet Roland comes out with a DA5 killer this week at the NAMM show. _________________ Gerald Ross

Sounds like I should have gone with the DA-10 instead of the DA-5,,,fuller sound is what I need,,,problem is there is no place around here to evaluate them,,,mine are all mail order (GREAT price though). |

Sonny, you're not going to get the bass response of a 12" speaker using the DA-10. I use the Vox as my travel amp. The tone is "good enough". It is fine for jam sessions where most of the instruments are acoustic.
When playing with a big band I use my Roland Cube 60 - that has a 12" speaker. I used the Roland on the bandstand when I was in West Virginia last week. See the videos: http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=113663
BUT, there are times I use the Vox on the bandstand. During those times I mic it through the main sound system. _________________ Gerald Ross

Yes Gerald I'm aware of the limitations of the small speaker as compared to "a 12" bass speaker",,,nor do I expect that,,,but with the advances in technology that are being made daily,,,and the positive reviews of the Vox here on the forum,,,I thought,,uuuum,,maybe??? I'm disappointed,,,but,,,beauty is in the eye of the beholder,,,different strokes for different folks,,,variety is the spice of life,,,it would be a dull world if we all liked the same thing,,,etc,,etc. All I use it for is travel and practice,,,I normally use my NV 112s for playing my PSG out,,and the few occasions I play the lap out. Don't mean to offend anyone,,,just MY opinion of the DA-5,,,and I posted strictly to probe the forum to see if I'm missing an adjustment,,or setting,,or ???
,,,BTW,,,GREAT playing on the videos at Augusta,,,bet that was a FUN time. Is that an annual event,,or ?? |

All is cool Sonny.
The Augusta Heritage Center just celebrated it's 35th year of hosting traditional American music and arts in the summertime. The center and classes are held at Davis-Elkins College in Elkins, WV. Everyone stays on campus in the dorms and interact with each other 24/7. There are really no barriers between teachers and students.
Augusta divides the summer into theme weeks of instruction. Bluegrass, Irish, Cajun, Blues, Swing, Guitar, Old-Time in addition to traditional crafts.
I taught at Swing week. This week is Irish music, next week is Bluegrass (Dave "Hula Monster" Giegerich is teaching Dobro during that one).
Augusta has had many great instructors in the past... Johnny Gimble, Lyle Ritz, Johnny Frigo, Peter Wernick, Liz Carroll, Howard Armstrong, Mary Flower, Mike Dowling, Tim O'Brien etc. etc. _________________ Gerald Ross

Hi Gerald,
The room we tried to test the amps (in the amp room)was pretty quiet.
I didn't bring along some batteries, so I was testing it at the amps full wattage instead of 5 watts.
The DA-20 had considerably more volume (with less breakup)and more bass than the DA-5; but what I was saying is that there was no change in tone.
So, if you liked the tone of the DA-5, you'll like the tone of the DA-20.
If you didn't like the tone, wait to see if Roland comes out with something. |

We'll know on Friday July 27th if Roland upgrades the MicroCube or not. Summer NAMM starts Friday in Austin, TX. From what I've heard about the Roland company, they are very tight-lipped about product announcements until the day of the tradeshow.
I bet Roland does something. The DA-5/10/20 are giving the MicroCube some heavy competition (even so, the MicroCube still looks cooler) _________________ Gerald Ross
