I just bought a little Vox DA 5,,,(heard some good things about them here on the forum) to play my lap steels through,,,and I can't seem to get a tone aside from the thin Hawaiian sound,,,,I'm more oriented toward a thicker swing tone. The guitars I'm playing through it are my 8 string, 22 1/2" scale, C6 tuned guitars that I'm making.

My old (30s) Rick frypan sounded terrific thru Derrick Mau's DA-5. He has been at my house all week, and played all guitars thru all the amps around here. He always said that the guitar has to match the amp, and proved it this week. The pickup impedence seems to have to match the amp input impedance to some degree, from what I can figure out. A humbucker with the two coils in series is quite high impedence, and affects the sound, it seems, as compared to a single coil like the old Ricks.
Just my observations.

Regards BILL

on my Vox DA5 I take the amp model #3 for the thicker swing tone.

I believe he's referring to the Style control. I don't see anything on Vox's web site that refers to a Model control.

Sonny, see the knob marked "Style" with the various amp settings around it?

There are both a Blues 3 and a HiGain 3 settings. Probably... probably... Thomas is referring to the Blues 3 setting, seeing as you prefer a swing tone.

Sonny,

on the knob marked "Style" I use "Blues 1".
(The 3rd position on that knob)

Yeh,,,the Blues 1 is about my best choice. I guess my problem is the absence of bass on the amp,,,there is the "tone" knob,,which is no more than a treble cut,,,but I can't get any bass,,,to give some "body" to the tone,,,. It will "scream",,,for the young guitar guys,,,
