I just got back from the Augusta Heritage Center in Elkins, West Virginia where I spent a week teaching intermediate Swing Ukulele and beginning Hawaiian/Western Swing non-pedal steel guitar.
I had the time of my life! I averaged three hours of sleep each night/morning, and made some new dear musical friends.
It was a religious experience! I met, jammed, ate, drank (daily happy hour in the trombone player's room) and joked around with amazing musicians from all over the USA. There were straight ahead jazz cats from the East Coast and Western Swing Cowboys from west of the Mississippi.
Musicians on these videos include - Liz Masterson, Kathy Reitz, Gerald Ross, Marv Reitz, Steve Larrance, Ralph Gordon, Tom Mitchell, Robert Redd, Ron Jones, Miss Tess, Ed Crow and Roger Bellow.
I played steel guitar all week long at the jam sessions and the dances.
Here are some videos of the Western Swing band we threw together for two dances on Monday and Wednesday evenings at the outdoor dance pavillion. No rehearsal - just calling out tunes. I'm playing my 1947 Rick Bakelite (Aiell-icized) through my Roland Cube 60 amp.

Enjoy - I need a nap. ![Wink](images/smiles/icon_wink.gif) _________________ Gerald Ross

Thanks, Gerald. I do something like that about 5 times a year with a bunch of friends of mine. Twice at the Strawberry Music Festival on Memorial and Labor days, once at the Live Oak Festival in late June and we have a couple of semi private get togethers as well. Gilroy in the summer and Morro Bay in the winter.
I was particularly pleasantly suprised to hear that our approach to the steel is very similar. If only I could work this here new fangled computer de-vice I'd give you a sample. |

Gerald - I would love to hear more about what the experience was like at Augusta, if you are interested in sending me a PM. lesdoerfler a t verizon d o t net.
I am going to be there in two weeks to take a class with Mary Flower. It's my first guitar camp so I'm a bit nervous as well as excited.
Any tips on what would be good to bring along would be appreciated.
PS although I am going for a guitar class, I'm going to bring along my Lazy River weiss. I'm not very good on it, but what better place to jump in.
