Older type strobe tuner

Post by Kurt Graber »

I have been reading a book on Tap Tuning and need to get a strope tuner to try some experiments (like a peterson 450 for example). Let me know what you have and price. Thanks..

Hi Kurt. I have just recently (like in the past day or two) started thinking about replacing my Conn strobotuner with something smaller, lighter, newer, etc. I won't be able to sell it till I find my replacement (a VS or flip, etc.) (and I'd need to see what a fair price is) but I thought I would see if you have any interest in that model and if time is a real factor.
Regards

Kurt, or Harvey, you might find this strobe tuner interesting. And the price is good.

Harvey & Mike, Thanks for the responses. That unit looks like it would work fine (Turbo Tuner) for $129.
I was looking for a Peterson 450 or something similer but at least I know where I can get something new and what it's going to cost. I'll wait a few days and probably buy that one unless someone makes me a better offer...

Just for added info, Jim Eaton has one and says it works real good. I'm going to be getting one, also, as soon as I can scrape up the money.
Best regards,

The older strobe tuners with the neon bulbs will work just fine. These are the Conn ST-4,ST-6 and the ST-11. Peterson strobe tuners in this category are the ST-400 and 420 (maybe another I missed). The 450 has LED's instead of the neon bulbs and to me they tend to flash on and off too quickly when the signal gets low.

If you are doing experiments you should get the tuner that will show you all of the overtones (harmonics / partials)along with the fundamental. This way you can approximate the strength of each, and understand which one is contributing the most to the sound heard. The Ptereson VS tuners may show the partials, but they jump around too much to be of much use for detailed studies.

A BIG caution if buying a used strobe tuner: it may not work properly! I bought a used Conn ST-11 from a friend's widow for $100. It looked great and the lights worked and the disc turned. But, the motor was dragging and some of the notes would not register. After a $197.00 refurb at the factory, I now have a great tuner. Use caution with everything used or on e-bay in this category.

Thanx,
Jim

I have an LED Strobe from Peterson. Works fine, stepper motor a little noisy.

I will look at the model number when I get back to the house. 2 rack space. AutoStrobe 490 Peterson.
