I have both a 6 string and an 8 string Goldtone Oahu Tonemaster. I feel they are excellent bang for the buck when looking at new instruments. I don't believe the 8 stringer is even pictured in their catalog and was a little hard to come by.

Erv: Where ever did you find an 8-string Goldtone? They have them in their on-line catalog, but Goldtone would not respond at all to my requests for vendor names, or any other information about these instruments.

You must be one of the lucky few.

I know that Music Folk in the St. Louis, MO area had one in their store in June. I played it and thought it sounded fine. If I needed another steel guitar it would have been a good choice.

To answer Will's original question, all of the steels he's mentioned have been discussed here previously. I personally have only played the West Coast Steel and Gold Tone lap steels, in spite of Colin Alder's invitation to come down to Santa Cruz to check out his guitars.

Elderly Instruments has 6 string Goldtone lap steel guitars in stock, but have 8 string Goldtone lap steel guitars on order. The delivery date is unknown.

Dennis,
I got my 8 string at Elderlys. Sometimes they have them and some times they don't. You just have to keep checking. Very Happy

Erv: thanks for the information. Elderly is almost always my first choice for things acoustic. I'll just keep checking with them for an 8 string Goldtone.

Will,
Before you make a decision on a particular brand you may want to check Ryan Rukavina's web site. It is www.Rukavinaguitars.com. I have an 8 string custom made lap steel that he made and I will tell you it is top quality. Also, he will make it to your specifications. The one I have has the 22 1/2 inch scale and has a Wallace Truetone pickup and the tone and sustain is great. His workmanship is as good as it gets.
