I've played with fingerpicks now for about two years and I've been getting better at it. I damp with my picks and I have to work on this. Recently I heard a recording where the noise from my damping was really, really annoying.

This led me to try to play without the picks again, which was the way I played for years. it felt better. not just better than with the picks but better than it had felt before I started using the picks.

For slow tunes I think I prefer the sound I can get with my bare fingers. Anyway, going back and forth between fingerpicks and bare fingertips is a bigger change in tone than even the wildest distortion pedal.

You have a greater range of DYNAMICS with picks, from soft and warm to hard and loud, IMHO

Hello, we talked about this a few months ago, in case you missed it, it was pretty interesting at least to me -

Thanks for the replies and tips. I'll check that other thread out more carefully later.

It took me many years to get used to finger picks but now I would never play without them. I love the tone, volume, and clarity that you get with them. I'm actually at a point where I completely forget that I'm wearing them because they feel like a natural extension of my fingers. This took a long time, though, and it was not always the case. BTW, I really like the Propik comfort picks and Golden Gate thumb picks.

Interesting thread.... For pedalsteel and dobro I use a National thumbpick and two dunlop fingerpicks but for acoustic guitars and electric slide just a thumbpick and fingers...I find the clarity & tone of using fingertips/fingernails for acoustic and slide is remarkable..

What I like about the picks is the feel. I can play faster without getting caught in the strings, it feels more relaxed. Also, I get more volume and that's alwyas fun! The clarity is nice but not necessarily a plus, it depends on the tune.

At the same time it feels less connected with the instrument. Playing with my bare fingers feels more in touch with the instrument and in some ways I can get more different tones this way.

I should perhaps point out here that the main instrument I play isn't a lapsteel or a guitar but an elelctric balalajka, a little like an electric mandolin if you will. I use a slide when I play it.
