Topic: Does laquer checking appear overnight? |

I've just noticed some laquer checking on my blonde Pro-1 that I (think I've) never noticed before.
Perhaps I was blinded by the beauty of this guitar, and didn't see what I didn't want to see before. It sort of adds character, but then it sort of doesn't too.
I left the heater on in my practice room overnight a few nights ago by mistake and then turned it off in the morning when it was about -2 outside. A quick change in room temperature wouldn't cause laquer to check over night would it? |

Usually, checking appears when the instrument goes rapidly from a cold to a warm environment (what we used to call a Custom Saskatchewan Finish).
Like coming out of a car trunk at -30 and opening the case in a nice warm club. You can actually hear it. And the subsequent sobs.

| Yes, it can happen in a very short time. It may be hard to notice, at first, because the checking can start out very light, and then the edges of the tiny cracks get darker (with age). Modern (and new) finishes are much more resistant to this problem, but it can still appear, under the right (or should I say "wrong"?) conditions. |

I weather-checked my 1st good guitar, a 65 Melody Maker, cherry finish, beautiful. Played outdoor gig, 40 degrees, took it home, opened the case- it checked right before my eyes! Still got the guitar, it's still cool! JP

I bought a two-year old lefty J45 a few years ago from a guy in Vegas. I made the mistake of taking it to Indiana with me on a trip, and it was below zero. Instant checking! Ah, just looks vintage now.
