My friend brought over his Fender Steel King and we compared it to my Webb. I could match the mid range and the highs of the Webb, but the Steel King on 10 on bass could not match my Webb bass knob on 6. Overall the Webb is about a 40% bigger sound. The Steel King was very clear with decent bass response much better than Peavey. I wouldn't hesitate to use a Steel King. Its a good amp, but the Webb is a bigger sound.

I played both side for side for a few months, then kept the Steel King and sold the Webb. I thought the Webb had far better reverb but the Steel King had more intuitive tone controls. Since I use an external reverb, in my case, the amp's reveb is not important. I was able to dial in a good tone with the Steel King in a hurry. In fact I was able to get a range of very good tones out of the the FSK in just a few minutes of use. They both have tons of bass and maybe the Webb had a little more but the FSK has so much bottom end that I raise it off the floor a bit to reduce the bass.

They are both fine amps. I do prefer the Steel KIng but these amps are real close in performance. Given that, I could never justify paying twice as much (or more) for a Webb than for a Steel King.

Ihave a Steel King as a "loaner" to see if I want to buy it. Can you post some of your settings?
Thanks,
Roger

Roger, here's the settings I use to record and play at home with. No doubt these would have to be changed at higher volumes to reduce the treble. I am thinking about swapping in a black widow speaker after hearing of the great success stories with it in this forum. The settings are also listed here.

Steel King Settings (O'clock positions)

Gain = 10
EQ Tilt = 10
Treble = 2
Mid Level = 10
Mid Freq = 2
Bass = 2
Reverb = Off
Master = 12
Normal Switch Out
Limiter Switch In

After Michael Douchette's post a while back about the Webb amp that he tried and his disappointment with it, I would be interested to hear his take on the Steel King.

Ken, I'd like to try one; I just haven't had the opportunity. Tom's sending a new Webb to Bobbe's shop for me to have a go at, as well. I'll keep you posted...

Hey Mike, please do keep us posted on the FSK....if only they were a little lighter, though some say by replacing it with a B/W it helps. By the way I'm definitely gonna "try" to load my computer with those DVD clips of you playng with Tammy, then hopefully I'll burn a copy for you. Mail me your address mate, and I'll send it...together with some "spotted Dick" and custard that you learned to love when you were here in England with her in the 70's Smile

I stand corrected Mike, but it was the light blue Franklin you were playing anyway, and you had a full black beard and a silly white hat Smile Sometimes burning some DVD's isn't possible due to copyright, but I'll have a go. Cheers Smile

I would have to agree with Kevins description, as there was really a lot of the bass that came out of the Webb that was just not useable , at least in my style of playing ...I also liked the EQ section on the FSK better than the Webb ...The Webb was still a GREAT sounding amp !!...

I agree also with Stephen G on the speaker situation except for the Webb ...My old Webb had an E-150 that really held up well and sounded GREAT !!... The FSK has that hot rodded Eminence in it that can sound good pushed on some material ...Other times it sounds ready to blow when trying to play loud and clean ... I'm not sure if it's the speaker or the preamp/amp section ....You DO have to keep your bass low in ANY amp when playing loud ...There's not a speaker around that can handle bass freqencies when an amp is pushed to the max without distorting ...Something is gonna give ...Either the dirt from the speaker , or the amp/preamp ...Jim
