I just got a session 400 from ebay. The sensitivity knob is very scratchy when you turn it. sometimes the volume is fading in and out, and when it goes low there seems to be a little distortion coming through. It feels like the volume problem is coming from the sensitivity knob for sure. If I just tap the knob a bit once its in place the problem goes away. Has anyone delt with this?

I did a Sarno mod on an early one and three pots fell out on the bench, cold solder joints! Early wave soldering was poor on these amps. It was corrected later.

Also you could have a dirty pot or a leg broken on the pot that is barely making contact.

Im a little bit of a novice when it comes to amps. How can I figure out exactly what it is? Ive heard that you can get zapped working on a tube amp even when its off. Does the same stand for solid state?

I would recommend having a tech look at it. Even cleaning the pots required chassis removal.

I have never been bit by a Session 400 yet. The caps discharge fully shortly after the amp is off. 50 volt DC power supply rails in there for the outputs. A lot more forgiving than 450-700 DC volts on the plates of most tube amps!

Hey jerry, im in little rock. Ive been playing steel for about 4 years and 6 string for about 18 yrs. I play in several local bands and have been able to tour across the country a few times and across the pond a few times as well. being younger has enabled me to tour more often. I geuss i can fake it pretty well, but i would love to get a lesson some day.

On my Session 400 there is an input in the rear called Power Amp In.
You might try plugging it in there, although you will be bypassing the volume or tone controls on the front of the amp.
I use it this way, and adjust the tone through an external-effects unit.

There is not a power amp input in a Session 400. There is one on the Session 400 Limited amp, a much newer amp.

We are referring to a 25 year old plus amplifier. It is most likely a broken pot. It will require a technicians attention.

From what I hear it can be done on a session. My amp tech told me how to do it using a switching jack, but I ain't messed with it yet.
