I posted this topic quite a while a go. i am having trouble still.
I have made a hollow body lap steel. it has a one single coil, one volume and one tone pot system i made to amplify when waned.
it sounds pretty nice unamplified; a friend wanted the option.
this is an all wood construction except for the electronics.
I wired the pickup, vol pot, and tone pot and used th backs of the pots for grounds.
this is where the trouble begins. there is definately a ground problem as I have no output unless I touch the out put jack or any of the control knobs. there are screeches and all kinds of noise.
where oh where can i find a suitable ground inside this all wood guitar?

here is a wiring diagram I have used. actually, not the exact one. this is what i found on the web and can post.
I have a diagram from Seymour Duncan. it pretty much is the same thing.
it is simple and direct wiring.

Go to Fender's web site and get the 50's tele wiring drawing. That is your simple way for your application. IMHO

Curtis. thanks. the Esquire came close. I do not have a switch. just single coil and two pots.
I checked Seymour Duncan's site too.
the pickup I am using is a Seymour Duncan Antiquity.
the schematic that came with it shows this:

it is what I use in this application. finding a suitable ground is the difficulty.
I wired a previous lapsteel using this schematic and it works fine.I have a metal bridge and screw to ground to on that.
on this acoustic lap.I cannot ground to wood
Rolling Eyes
the backs of the pots have worked because I could ground them. but not now.

I'm sure you have connected all your grounds to a common ground that grounds to the ground lug of the jack.
If this does not fix it ground the pick up straight to the jack.
You must be touching the strings as you touch the pots that is grounding you now when you are getting sound from the instrument through the jack.

If I'm not mistaken the third lug on the volume pot (in the first diag.) needs to be grounded.Just bend it back and solder to the pot case.
You also need to make sure the bridge or some other part of the tailpiece has a wire connecting it to the back of a grounded pot case

Absolutely, grounding that third lug on the volume pot is necessary. It's the top left one when the lugs are pointing up.
