I am looking into buying a square neck Dobro. What are the names of some good manufacturers.

If your consider a $250 Johnson as the low end and the $6,000 Sheerhorn as the high end, the medium priced models would be close to $3,000. That would put you in the middle of the Beard price range. Dick DeNeve makes some fine squarenecks for under $2,000, the Beard Gold Tone is around $1,000, and a Regal Lightning is around $700. The DeNeve or the Beard Gold Tone are great values. Don't expect to be happy with anything cheaper than the Regal Lightning.
I have a Deneve and a Gold Tone that I converted to 8 strings (via a new neck). Both sound great. Billy |

Check out the Wechter-Sheerhorn. Great dobros for under a grand. Just ask Johnny Bellar.

For about $650 you can get a Beard Gold Tone and case set up at the Beard factory, a very decent starter reso, from Elderly or Gruhn. If you order one make sure it was set up at the Beard factory. There is a sticker inside to let you know.
A step up would be one of Jim Adams guitars for about $1000. You might be happier with an Adams than anything else comparable at the price, like a Wechter-Scheerhorn.
At $1800 you can get a very fine guitar made by Dick DeNeve, or a B & B guitar made by Dan Brooks. You could also get a Beard Vintage R new for about $1850, or if you look hard enough, a used Beard Standard R for about $2000. Hard to go wrong with a Beard, particularly if you can get one used at a good price. Beard E's can be found used for about $2700 to $3000.
At $3000 to $4000 you can take your pick from exceptional new guitars made by Clinesmith, Harper, Harlow, Meredith and Beard, to name a few makers, but expect a wait unless you find one used on Ebay, here or at reso-nation.

| I thought the quality of the Wechter Scheerhorns was terrible personaly. I think for a decent guitar to start on try out a couple Beard Goldtones. The PBS Deluxe and Mahogany models are well built and set up in the US.My 2ยข |
