To my ear, the Gibson guitars, with the one exception being Roy Wiggins, always seemed to have a very thin sound.......from top to bottom on all strings. Somewhat like the Sierra Guitars IMHO.
The Nat'ls, Ric's, and various others tended to project a fuller bodied "sound".
Could just be wax in my ears.......I dunno. |

Owning Gibson, National and Ric, I can tell you the Ric has a much fatter sound than the Gibson. The National has a very distictive sound of its own.  |

I think this is more applicable to all Gibson steels rather than just the Console Grande, assuming that's the original thread to which you're referring.
I think the Gibsons I've owned have had a unique sound. Although the EH-150 I have is probably one of my favorites tonally, it's definitely not what I would characterize as a "Hawaiian" sound based on what I have heard people playing. Then again, I've heard Roy Thomson's examples of fine playing on a Gibson BR-9 right on this forum, so what do I know?

I have a Gibson EH-185 with the ES-300 style slanted pickup. The tone is big and fat- in a lot of ways I prefer the sound to my Stringmaster.
